5 Tricks to Help Your Cat Lose Weight

How to Help Your Cat Lose Weight

Fat cats are cute, but feline obesity can lead to some serious complications for your cat’s quality of life. The good news is, you can help your cat lose weight with just a few simple lifestyle changes.

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, approximately 59.5% percent of cats in the U.S. are overweight or obese.

Many factors contribute to this, including overeating and a lack of exercise.

As it is in humans, excess weight in cats can lead to health problems such as diabetes, liver disease, arthritis, skin issues, and more.

But never fear, there are a few simple lifestyle changes you can make to hopefully help your chubby cat shed a few pounds.

4 Simple Ways to Help Your Cat Lose Weight

1. Limit Feeding

Free-feeding (leaving the bowl filled 24/7) is a major contributor to overweight felines. Pick up the bowl and start offering a set amount at designated times. In addition, ask your veterinarian for food suggestions and how much your cat should eat daily to lose weight. You don’t have to buy a veterinary diet sold by the clinic; simply ask him or her to recommend a brand/formula that’s a good fit for your feline (and your budget).

2. Plan for Playtime

Unless you actively engage your cat in play, she’ll likely nap the day away. Set a timer and play with your kitty for 15 minutes, twice a day. Use whatever her favorite toys are—feathers on sticks, catnip, etc. You can even make your own homemade toys from simple household items.

3. Let Them Play While You’re Away

Work long hours? No problem. There are some fantastic ways to keep your cat entertained while home alone. In addition to giving your cat a new feline friend, you can also outfit your home with accessories and toys that will surely keep them engaged while you’re away.

4. Make Food time Fun

Cats are natural hunters. Harnessing this instinct will help your cat lose weight. Instead of putting his bowl in its normal place, encourage him to “hunt” for his food. Measure the food and then divide it amongst four little bowls or dishes. Hide the dishes in various places around the house. The first few times, you may have to help with the hunt as he may be confused by the change in routine, but he’ll catch on quickly. You can also sprinkle some dry kibble into the holes in a muffin tin or another container that requires your cat to grab the kibble with her paw. This activity encourages problem-solving and makes her work a little harder for her meal, thereby burning more calories and turning mealtime into an adventure!
